Females, on the other hand, often produce eggs for 25 years or more. Even if the male escapes being eaten by the female, he will still die within a few months. His death will give the female a needed boost of nutrition, as she must now produce 500 to 1,000 eggs and a silk cocoon where the eggs will be protected. The male must then participate in a dangerous mating dance, wherein he fends off the female, who wishes to devour him, by using hooks on his front legs. To alert the female of his presence, the male taps one of his legs against the ground until the female emerges. Tarantulas are solitary animals there is only one spider in this burrow. The male follows the scent of a female tarantula to the receptive female's burrow, which she has typically excavated in dry, sandy soil and lined with silk webbing. Should you observe a desert tarantula in Joshua Tree National Park this autumn, it is likely to be a male in search of a mate. When a male tarantula reaches sexual maturity, between eight and ten years of age, he begins a journey that will both aid the survival of his species and cost him his life. Although this outcome may seem grisly from our human perspective, nature knows only one standard: survival. Upon hatching, the wasp larvae will eat the tarantula alive. The wasp then seals its paralyzed prey inside the burrow. ![]() A single tarantula hawk can sting and paralyze a tarantula, drag the spider back to a prepared burrow, and lay eggs upon the still-living creature's abdomen. However, the most ferocious is the tarantula hawk, a large, metallic blue and orange wasp. Tarantulas have many natural predators including larger lizards, snakes, and birds. When cornered by a predator, the tarantula will rub its hind legs over its abdomen, brushing hairs into its enemy's eyes. Many tarantulas have a bald spot on the abdomen as a result of a unique defensive behavior. ![]() Besides its eight legs, the basic sections of a tarantula's body are its cephalothorax (a fused head and thorax, or chest) and its abdomen. Tarantulas, the largest spiders in North America, are typically two to three inches long and are covered with thousands of fine hairs ranging in color from tan to dark brown. ![]() One of the species that best embodies this relationship between life and death is the desert tarantula, Aphonopelma iodium. At no other time is the intimate connection between life and death represented so clearly. ![]() Suburbia hits on so many things that I love about board games that it’s hard (though not impossible) to find flaws in the design. Projected Impact on Population (thoughts) If your burrough’s population increases too fast, your income will dry up making it difficult to buy future tiles. There’s a bit of a balancing act in gaining points the population (point) track has several red markers that once passed, you lose an income and a reputation. The rest of your turn plays out by gaining or losing money and points based on your current income and reputation, sliding down remaining market tiles, and drawing a new one from the first available stack. If played correctly, this can make for some dramatic end-game turns. The cost of the investment is the cost of the invested tile plus the additional cost from the discarded one, then BAM! The immediate and ongoing effects of the tile are doubled for the rest of the game. The alternative to playing a tile is placing an investment marker on a city in your burrough and discarding one tile from the market. This makes for real meaty, strategic decisions, yet they are never so complex that you will be overwhelmed. For instance, when you put down a tile that gives you “+1 income for each adjacent office”, that means all current and future adjacent offices will trigger it’s effect. You see, when a tile enters play, you resolve the effects on it, then you resolve the effects of every other tile if applicable. No matter what type: lakes, market, or basic, you pay the listed cost plus the additional cost based on its position in the market, then place it next to another tile in your city so the magic can begin. Basic tiles are available for purchase so long as some are left in the supply, tiles in the market can be purchased face up, or flipped over and used as lakes. Visualize, Realize, and Actualize! (Gameplay)Įach turn you add a new tile to your city or invest in a tile you already own. Both the public and personal goals award points at the end of the game for having the most or least of some element (money, type of city tile, reputation, etc…) public goals can be earned by any player, the personal goals are kept secret and can only be earned by their player. Players each have a player board that forms a border of their city and tracks their income and reputation, then they are given three starting basic tiles, three investment tokens, starting money, and two personal goals keeping one and discarding the other. The first seven tiles of stack A are displayed in the market showing a scale of additional costs, then public goals are drawn. Basic city tiles are set aside face up, and are always available to be purchased. Setup starts by randomly picking city tiles of the three different levels (A, B, and C) and forming face down stacks, with the end of game “one more round” tile being mixed into the middle of stack C. Still, the artists Mass MoCA have selected credit it for allowing experimentation. “There’s more wariness about taking on something too new or too experimental among us, including Mass MoCA,” he said. Michael Darling, chief curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, noted, though, that since the recession, many museums have focused more on artists with name recognition. Among the words they used to describe Mass MoCA’s curatorial program are “less ambitious than it once was,” “more middlebrow” and “gun shy.” It was the Kiefer opening and the display of Xu Bing’s “Phoenix,” two gigantic birds made of detritus, that pushed 2013’s attendance far above the more typical 120,000 visitors.īut some curators at those museums, while declining to speak on the record for collegial reasons, disagree. ![]() Together, the LeWitt and Kiefer exhibitions have muddied Mass MoCA’s profile as a presenter of experimental art. One day last month, he showed off a second semi-permanent installation, which opened last September: three massive works by Anselm Kiefer borrowed from the Hall Art Foundation and installed in a renovated water tank building. “Before that, everything we did changed every year, and when you change shows, the cupboard may be bare,” Mr. When the installation opened in 2008, Holland Cotter of The New York Times called the setting “close to perfect.” For Mass MoCA, it was also close to a permanent collection, which it lacks. Thompson, aside from putting new pressure on the museum’s small staff, $7 million annual budget and minuscule $3 million endowment (plus $12 million in reserves), may further challenge the museum’s stated identity as “an experimental platform for art making.” His plans call for Mass MoCA to devote half its exhibition space to art that already exists. ![]() Since then, in some eyes, Mass MoCA has lost some of its appetite for risk. Büchel charged that Mass MoCA had mismanaged the project and had allowed some people to see the work before completion, while the museum called his demands unreasonable and said he had abandoned the project - landed in court, and though the parties eventually settled, both sullied their reputations in the process. Thompson said, when Mass MoCA had no endowment and no cash reserve. It blew past its $165,000 limit to about $385,000, driving the budget “to the brink,” Mr. Most notably, the museum brushed with financial disaster in 2006, thanks to the exploding costs of a vast, unfinished installation by the Swiss artist Christoph Büchel. It will double its exhibition space to 260,000 square feet - more than DIA:Beacon’s 240,000 square feet in Beacon, N.Y., and just shy of the total gallery space at the sprawling Los Angeles County Museum of Art.īut the expansion will again test Mass MoCA, which has teetered several times before and since its opening in 1999. Ripe for growth, Mass MoCA will now spread into nearly all corners of its 26-building campus. “Mass MoCA has become a really important asset in North Adams,” said Jamie Bennett, executive director of ArtPlace America, which awards grants to encourage such “creative placemaking” pursuits around the country. And it has become a model for hundreds of other localities hoping to use culture as an economic driver. Now that I've written these questions, I realize that there's some experimentation I should do. ![]() I'd be interested in any discussion people might have about making a timelapse of a solar eclipse, but I'm particularly interested in wide-angle shooting and these questions:ġ) What do you think about the tradeoff between getting sufficient frames during totality and having a long enough exposure time to capture stars? Is a 3 second exposure long enough to get worthwhile stars (with small aperature and high ISO)?Ģ) Do you have any thoughts about auto holy grail in qdslrdashboard for this purpose? I suspect that maybe the shutter speeds and ISO have to be changed manually because the darkness will come and go so quickly, and the histogram will be too heavily influenced by the sun, which will have to blow out anyway. ![]() I'm wondering if others are thinking about this or have thoughts about whether and how to change shutter speeds. (My current plan is to shoot from one hour before to one hour after the eclipse and then, possibly, to speed up the non-eclipse parts in Premiere Pro.) I think that 4 second intervals are the longest I could afford so that totality is more than just a blink in time 1.6 seconds at 24 frames per second, specifically. The problem is that totality only lasts two minutes so there's not much time for ramping or for long exposures. Also, I have an other-worldly type of landscape in mind and it would be cool to retain more landscape definition and to see stars (even if only very briefly) during totality. I think this is very effective with his cool landscape and I may end up using constant exposure for mine, but part of his success is due to the reflection on the water, which I won't have.
